All Gone Dead Were fucking awesome. Reminded me I guess of older Goth rock bands (of the era of Specimen and the like, sorry Nik should that be goth *punk*, *old* goth or *real* goth or what ?) but also with a large dose of punk just to really liven things up. I think the punk ethos showed through in the lyrical topics a fair bit too. Very tight, and really should have been way up the billing IHMO.
Violet Stigmata Bored the shit outta me. Every song sounded the same, and once the guitars started, they just *continued* with no real sense of purpose. Ok so they dressed up, cheaply and boringly in my opinion, and they at least repeated some lyrics to give an instant hook on most songs, tho those hooks weren,t really enough to save them. Oh and just what the fuck is Deathrock about them ?
Miguel and the Living Dead Despite repeated listens, never could really get into them recorded. And to be honest, I'm not a big fan of the Misfits.... However, they were abso-fucking-lutely great. Right from the first self-intro track, through the wolf howls and right on throught the 'pit til the end, these guys had everything in spades. It still bewilders me why they were below GoL on the billing (I can only guess it was a *marketing* decision on the part of Nik to try and cover costs by attracting the trad goths with a trad headliner).
The Ghost of Lemora Ok so another band with the standard "X of Y" trad goth name, trotting out uninspired trad goth with a singer that clearly fancied himself waaaaaaay too much. The drum machine *did* variy from the normal hi hat dirge that we are all sooo sick of, but despite the best efforts the lack of any decent hooks or repetition in the lyrics meant it all just washed away in to the background the the clones ofthe clones of the clones of the sisters they are. The crowd almost halved watching them from the previous band. That shows something I guess.
Nik Dunno what he has against me, and I'm not entirely sure I'm too bothered, but to be described as a "Deathrock Denier" really shows how little he knows about me. Right from day one after hearing DP I was hooked on their music, and one of the (very) few people to venture onto the dancefloor, nay request them at the old southampton nights he DJ'd. (Ok DP aren't strictly deathrock, but they're certainly in that bracket and probably one of the biggest catalysts in the rise of the deathrock scene in the UK) Taking a look at my iPod you'll find almost no trad goth bands on there, a few american goth bands possibly (Switchblade Symphony mostly), and the rest is stuff like Zombina and The Horrorpops. I don't think I've ever bitched about him personally, and certainly I have nothing against the guy. Hell, anyone willing to put events on in london in this scene is a hero in my books... Maybe he hates my band (probably), maybe he thinks I've slagged him off, maybe he just listens to other peoples opinions of me, maybe he just thinks I hate Deathrock and thinks that means we have no common ground.... Whatever it is I'm not sure it's worth my time to worry about. But I will say this much.... You really have the wrong idea about me if you think I'm a Sisters loving "Deathrock Denier". |
